A Year of Turbulence – and Triumphs
27. November 2025
When Rita stood on the apron the day Tuukkaq taxied towards the terminal for the very first time, she was filled with a mix of relief and excitement.
“Opening day was something truly special. We had worked for years to reach that point, and when Tuukkaq landed, I knew we had made history. But I also knew that the real challenge was only just beginning.”
Behind the scenes, a range of challenges awaited. New systems had to be implemented during full operations, procedures needed fine-tuning, and an entirely new team had to find its rhythm in an airport that was new to everyone.
“We’ve faced technical issues, procedural challenges, and weather-related obstacles. In every way, it’s been a demanding year with a very steep learning curve. But the staff has given their all, and we’ve stood together as a team, united by the belief that we can do this. That’s what gives us energy,” she says.
Despite the challenges, Rita is proud of how far the airport has come in just one year:
“In large part, we’ve built a well-functioning airport that connects people and opportunities. It’s not just a workplace – it’s a vital lifeline for the entire country. And that’s something I’m truly proud of,” she explains.
And that’s why she looks to the coming years with optimism.
“We’re certainly not at the finish line yet – as most people know, there are still things we need to develop and improve. But we’ve proven that we can handle pressure and deliver results. That gives me the confidence that we can manage whatever lies ahead,” she concludes.
Nuuk Airport officially opened on 28 November 2024. It is part of an airport package including three brand-new airports in Greenland, with Qaqortoq and Ilulissat also receiving new airports, scheduled to open in 2026. In total, Greenland Airports operates 13 airports and 46 heliports.
