Becoming an AFIS operator is for those who want to get close to aviation—right at the heart of the decisions that keep air traffic safe. It is one of the most specialized training programmes in Greenland.
What does an AFIS Operator do?

Working as a mechanic in Greenland Airports means becoming part of the technical team that keeps the entire airport running—from large snow‑clearing machines to the specialized airport vehicles that ensure safe operations in an Arctic environment. It’s a job with responsibility, pace, and plenty of hands‑on technical work every day.

You train as a mechanic at: KTI – Iron & Metal School in Nuuk (Tech College Greenland) Here you can complete:
KTI educates automotive mechanics and heavy equipment mechanics as part of its Iron & Metal day school. The automotive mechanic programme is completed entirely at the Iron & Metal School in Nuuk.
The automotive mechanic programme lasts 4 years, of which 55 weeks are school periods and the rest are internships. The programme is structured as follows:
Students alternate continuously between school and internships, and school‑based internships are available if a placement cannot be found independently.

Once you have completed KTI’s mechanic training, you are ready to become part of the technical team in the airports.
