AFIS Operator (Aerodrome Flight Information Service)

Becoming an AFIS operator is for those who want to get close to aviation—right at the heart of the decisions that keep air traffic safe. It is one of the most specialized training programmes in Greenland.

What does an AFIS Operator do?

As an AFIS operator, you are the “eyes and voice” in the tower of Greenland’s airports. You:

  • Provide pilots with critical information about wind, weather, visibility, and runway conditions.
  • Monitor air traffic in the local area and ensure that all aircraft receive the necessary information for a safe landing and takeoff.
  • Perform weather observations and enter them into systems that are distributed globally.
  • Operate functions in the AFIS tower, including radio, instruments, and communication equipment.

What does the training require?

The training places demands on both mind and body:

  • You must be fluent in Danish and English—communication takes place in these languages.
  • You need strong skills in mathematics, as calculations and measurements are part of the job.
  • You must be in good physical condition, as the job may include working at all hours of the day.
  • You must be able to obtain approval through a clean criminal record and meet aviation security requirements.
  • And most importantly: You must be able to stay calm under pressure, take responsibility, and thrive in both quiet periods and busy situations.

Where does the training take place?

This is a specialized programme delivered only in one location in the country:

  • Theory and basic training: Kangerlussuaq (ATS Basic) – approx. 11 weeks.
  • Further training: Tower simulator, weather observations, AFIS theory, etc.
  • On the Job Training: In one of Greenland Airports’ training airports, such as Nuuk, Ilulissat, Narsarsuaq, and others.

You will therefore attend both classroom training and practical instruction directly in the tower.

How long does the training take?

The full training programme lasts 11–13 months, divided between theory, simulator training, and practical training.
