New Air Traffic Control Solution Prepares Nuuk Airport for Increased Traffic

The Danish Transport Authority has approved the implementation of a new air traffic control solution in the airspace surrounding Nuuk Airport, and the current restrictions on the number of arrivals and departures are expected to be gradually lifted.

As part of the approval, a designated area of controlled airspace – known as a Terminal Maneuvering Area (TMA) – has been established around Nuuk Airport. Within this area, air traffic controllers will monitor and manage aircraft movements to and from the airport.

Going forward, air traffic to and from the airport will be managed by controllers at Naviair’s flight information centre in Nuuk. The controllers will work closely with the AFIS service at Nuuk Airport, which will continue to provide pilots with advisory services and operational information in the vicinity of the airport during take-offs and landings.

For Greenland Airports, the approval marks an important milestone in the ongoing efforts to create a more efficient traffic operation at Nuuk Airport. The new air traffic control solution will operate in line with the airport’s opening hours and will generally be active from 06:00 to 21:00, covering the periods of highest traffic volume.

With the implementation of the new solution, the current restrictions on the number of arrivals and departures at Nuuk Airport are expected to be lifted gradually as the new operational unit gains experience in managing the airspace.

“The new air traffic control solution provides a stronger foundation for handling traffic at Nuuk Airport in a more robust and efficient manner,” says Mie Rajcic, Chief Operating Officer at Greenland Airports.

“It improves the conditions for traffic management during the airport’s operational hours and represents an important step in the continued development of operations in Nuuk,” she adds.

The TMA will become operational on Thursday, 14 May 2026, at 06:00 local time and is the result of close collaboration between Greenland Airports, Naviair, and the Danish Transport Authority.
